Hair Journey 1/31/12: Update #1

picture of my hair in january 2012

Please read my story first so this blog post will make sense: My Hair Journey

I'm starting a new monthly post describing the status of my hair and documenting the growth as well as any changes made to my routine. After some thought, I decided to share an experience I had last summer that left me with short hair. I will leave the explanation and more pictures in the navigation bar above along with an archive of the posts.

As always, thank you for all your support and amazing comments!

The photo above is the length of my hair as of 1/31/12. It doesn't look even because my hair has a wave to it but I promise it is! This is how it looked right after I went to the salon and had about an inch and a half taken off as well as some layers cut in. My new growth is hard to see because I just dyed my hair last month.

New products used:
Castor Oil
Indian Hemp

Routine:
When straightening: Use TRESemme Thermal Spray before blow drying. Spray it on again before flat ironing. Moroccanoil at the end of styling.
When leaving natural: Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-in Cream
Deep conditioning two times per week and shampooing every two to three days.

Health:
75% with some 3 inch flyaways

Length:
Longest layer touches an inch above the base of my neck

Look for my next update in a month :)

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I will return the love as soon as I can.

  2. i too have been on a hair journey, after chopping off my mid length locks back in may 2011 to a "rihana pixie cut" it was shaved in the back and longer in the front. i have been growing it out since then and trimming it every 8-12 weeks. i do hair updates on my blog as well ;-)

  4. Omg I just read your story- what an awful experience for you! Luckily you still have a substantial amount of hair on your head- they always say short hair is much more versitile! Looking at this picture, your hair looks like it is in extremely good condition, so carry on your regime because it's working! Xxx

  8. i'm going to be honest and say that because my hair is locked i'm usually not as interested in hair stories because the info never applies to me, but i read your hair journey..ohhhmmyyygooshhh i'm soooo sorry! i've had white friends that would ask me for recommendations to a salon that may be able to better care for their super curly hair, but i would have never thought that they needed a relaxer. just curious, do you know anyone else (non-WOC) that has used a relaxer? many black women can't use it because their hair isn't strong enough for the chemicals. the same thing happened to my sister, even though her hair was supposed to be strong enough to handle the chemicals. has your hair textured changed since this happened? sorry for the long comment and so many questions.

    1. thank you so much for reading doll. i personally don't know anyone white with my same hair texture, so i'm the only one to have ever tried a relaxer. i have read stories from other girls online though, and they were successful. that exact thing happened to me- i thought my hair was healthy enough to withstand the chemicals, even the slightly less harsh no-lye formula but it unfortunately was not. i would say that my curls have changed- they are less tight than before i used the relaxer. however, my new growth is coming in quite similar to my old hair so i don't think i did any permanent damage. i will keep updating with a post every month xx

  9. I am so sorry hun, I've got very curly (though I'd say frizzy) hair, and I have always longed to have straight, glossy pretty hair, like the girls who could easily cut and style their hair in minutes, so for years I straightened with my tongs.... and now I'm older I've realised how nice my hair is, and how i can work with it differently, but the damage has been done and my once thick locks are thin and very very dry... :(

I sympathise with you hun, we curly girls should love our hair and enjoy it :)
Oh well.... I am trying to bring back the moisture and strength my hair once had using a brand called Kérastase, they have a special protein mix... maybe you could try this?? I don't know if you can get it in the states but worth a try

I hope your hair gets better in the end hun :)

  10. thank you doll- luckily i've been investing in good products and it has been getting stronger and more healthy. i've heard wonderful things about kerastase i will have to try it sometime. i will be reviewing some of the things i use to keep my hair moisturized and prevent breakage soon so be on the lookout for that. we are blessed to have the versatility of curly hair even though it is a lot of work. protein+moisture is key for us. thank you again for reading xx
